Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations. Its roots lie in the traditions and ceremonies of the medieval stonemasons who built our cathedrals and castles. Some rituals are still celebrated today. Freemasonry has always been about making good men better. Individuals aim to shape their lives round five core principles.

Integrity: We say what we mean and we keep our promises.

Kindness: Although our families come first, we believe in playing a key role in our communities and give time and money to charitable ventures.

Honesty: We pride ourselves on openness, about what being a Freemason means for us.

​

Fairness: We treat everyone as equal – we listen to others, explore any differences and look for common ground.

​

Tolerance: We respect the opinions of others and behave with understanding towards them.

​

The Three Great Principles on which Freemasonry is founded. For centuries Freemasons have followed these three great Principles:

Brotherly Love, means that every true Freemason will show tolerance and respect for the opinions of others and will behave with compassion and understanding to his fellows. Relief, From earliest times Freemasons have been taught to help, to the best of their ability, those in distress. without detriment to any who are dependent upon them, and to give their support to outside Charities. Truth, Freemasons strive for truth both in their view of themselves and in their dealings with others. Masonry requires high moral standards and its members endeavour to uphold these principles in their public and private lives.

There are over 200,000 Freemasons in England and Wales.

There are more than 7,000 Lodges spread throughout England and Wales.

​

There are Six million Freemasons worldwide.

WHAT IS FREEMASONRY?

Freemasonry consists of a body of men brought together for the sake of mutual intellectual, social and moral improvement.

Freemasonry recognises no distinction of religion and emphasises the duties of citizenship. Religious or political discussion is not permitted in Lodge meetings.

​

Freemasonry offers no monetary advantages.

​

Freemasonry supports a wide range of charities, both Masonic and non-Masonic.

WHY BECOME A FREEMASON?

People have their own reasons why they enjoy Freemasonry.

The following is a sample of some of the reasons given:

Achievement – progressing through the various offices in the Lodge to become Worshipful Master.

Brotherhood – making new friends and acquaintances from all walks of life, every background and age group.

​

Charity – being able to contribute to deserving causes, both Masonic and non-Masonic.

​

Education – learning from peers and mentors by practising ritual and making short speeches.

​

Knowledge – finding out about the history and mysteries of Freemasonry.

​

Self improvement – making a contribution to your family and society.

Freemasonry means different things to each individual – making new friends, contributing to society, celebrating a long tradition, experiencing personal growth, taking up a hobby, having fun.
